New Haven, Conn., Sept. 24, 2024 - Dr. Valentina Greco (photo), a developmental biologist at the Yale School of Medicine (YSM), has been named one of Cell Press’ “ 50 Inspiring Scientists .” Cell Press selected the list as part of its 50th anniversary celebration.
Yale School of Medicine Logo
Greco is the Carolyn Walch Slayman Professor of Genetics and professor of cell biology and dermatology at YSM, a member of the Yale Cancer Center and the Yale Stem Cell Center, and co-chair of the Status of Women in Medicine. She is president-elect of the International Society for Stem Cell Research.
"I am delighted that Dr. Greco is receiving recognition for her excellence in science and leadership," said Nancy J. Brown , MD, dean of YSM.
Greco's lab is currently examining the types of cells that make up the skin to better understand its ability to regenerate and heal itself.
"We understand cellular behaviors as an expression of the architectures and principles that govern the tissues these cells inhabit," Greco said, "just as human behaviors are an expression of the systems and structures in which they are embedded, such as a laboratory or an organization."
In a field designed by men for men, Greco is aware of the impacts of systems and structures. “My own experience as a woman has been that in order for me to be successful, I am asked to have all the scientific talents, plus the ability to transform myself into the language, behaviors, and even appearance that men recognize and value,” she said. “Asking women, explicitly or tacitly, to conform to masculine norms robs the field of its diversity and women of their identity.”
Greco hopes that young aspiring scientists will follow his example. “I think there is a lot that this profession can offer, and we need you!” Greco said.
About Yale School of Medicine - YSM is one of the world's leading centers for biomedical research, advanced clinical care, and medical education. YSM's research ranges from basic science research into the molecular mechanisms and fundamentals of disease to translational and clinical studies aimed at improving diagnosis and treatment.

Zuniga Health Unlimited Telehealth Is a Unique Post-Covid Offer
Goya Cares launches a new educational video to raise young people about mental health

Miami, May 16, 2024 - During Covid, telehealth became a key element for people to seek care, and telehealth utilization was at an all-time high. Many post-Covid health plans are ending or limiting their telehealth offerings, while other health plans still believe in the importance of telehealth. Zuniga Health LLC, an innovative health plan for small and medium-sized businesses, has continued its commitment to free unlimited telehealth, while most other health plans charge fees of more than $40 for telehealth visits.
www.zunigahealth.com
Among the many benefits of telehealth is convenience: users don't have to leave home and can contact a doctor even outside of regular office hours. These benefits are especially interesting for employees who work irregular hours or live in underserved locations, where access to facilities is limited. It is also a savior for many employees with families, who have little time to travel and wait at a doctor's office. Telehealth offers services such as prescription refills, provider visits for pain, fever, seasonal flu, urinary tract infections, skin infections, etc. Telepsychiatry services continue to see strong growth as patients realize how convenient it is to conduct counseling and therapy from home.
Zuniga Health offers unlimited 24/7 telehealth and telepsychiatry on all plans, even the most basic ones. Services are offered in English and Spanish. Zuniga Health directly addresses the needs of Hispanic small businesses and their employees, as studies have shown that non-English speakers often have difficulty using telehealth.
Zuniga Health is the only Hispanic-owned health plan in the U.S. targeting the Hispanic business market. Zuniga Health's mission is to increase the number of Hispanic employees who get affordable and accessible health benefits, and telehealth plays an important role in that. Insurance premiums in the US are increasing by double-digit percentages. These accelerating costs are a threat to the economic stability of small businesses and workers' access to health care. Zuniga Health plans are very affordable and customizable on a "pay as you need" basis.
Zuniga Health's Minimum Essential Coverage (mec) and Minimum Value Plan (MVP) are designed to meet each employee's budget. In addition to unlimited telehealth, all plans have free preventive care and free preventive medications. Employees choose the number of doctor and lab visits they want for the year and pay accordingly. MVP options include hospital days. All plans use a top-tier provider network with thousands of Spanish-speaking providers.

Scammers Are Altering Seniors' Caller IDs: New York State Senior Action Council's "April Medicare Scam"
On the occasion of ET Embassy Day, the Raelian Movement Defends the Independence of Puerto Rico through the Establishment of an Extraterrestrial Embassy

Albany, New York , April 17, 2024 - The New York StateWide Senior Action Council (StateWide), an organization dedicated to defending the rights of seniors in the state of New York, today announced its Medicare Fraud of the Month for April: Tampering with Seniors' Caller IDs.
Statewide Fraud of the Month is a component of Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP ), the definitive resource for New York State seniors and caregivers to detect, prevent and report fraud, errors and abuse in health care. StateWide is the New York grantee/administrator for this Federal Program.
"Scammers are spoofing your caller ID to appear as Medicare, Social Security, or your doctor's office. They want to verify a person's information to steal their medical identity," explained María Álvarez, CEO of StateWide.
He added, "Medicare will never cold call you or ask you to verify your information. Also, beware of scammers offering you FREE gifts in exchange for your Medicare number, that's illegal."
Alvarez offers the following tips to New York seniors to protect themselves from such fraud:
If you answer the phone and it's not who you expected, HANG UP immediately.
Verify the IDENTITY of callers. Call again using a trusted number to confirm the legitimacy of the caller.
Never give PERSONAL information, such as your passwords, Medicare, or Social Security number to an unsolicited caller.
Do not answer any questions, especially those that can be answered with "YES" or "NO."
Be careful if you are being PRESSURED to get information right away.
Always review your Medicare statements. Look for SUSPICIOUS CLAIMS, such as supplies you didn't receive or services you didn't request.
To report a suspicious call, or if your personal information or Medicare number has been compromised, call the NYS Senior Medicare Patrol Helpline at 800-333-4374, or visit www.nysenior.org . Our counselors are ready to help!
The NYS SMP and its trained counselors and volunteers help educate Medicare beneficiaries in the fight against health care fraud. It also provides information and educational presentations.
It is estimated that Medicare fraud costs taxpayers more than $60 billion dollars nationally per year. To help combat this illicit industry, StateWide announced its Fraud of the Month program in 2022 to highlight these scams committed against the state's seniors.

CHAM's therapy dog, supported by NHL player Kevin Shattenkirk, begins work for Child Life Month
Bronx, NY , March 20, 2024 - Polly, a 23-month-old black Labrador, has joined the Child Life team at Children's Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) to support young patients during your hospitalizations and medical appointments. Certified Child Life Specialists (CCLS) assist children by making medicine a game to help them understand their illness, cope with medical procedures and achieve their health goals. Labrador Polly begins her new job at CHAM during Child Life Month , dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the important supportive role CCLS play with our youngest patients.
"Child Life is a specialty that has evolved over the last 100 years and uses different tools to educate and support children through the most difficult times in their lives," says Meghan D. Kelly, MSEd, CCLS. director of CHAM's Phoebe H. Stein Child Life Program. "Polly is the newest addition to CHAM. Our Child Life specialists will use Polly to help young patients who are nervous, facing long hospital stays and need help navigating difficult medical procedures. We are delighted to welcome Polly on CHAM's Child Life team."
Polly has spent the last six months with expert trainers from the Canine Companions organization, which since 1975 has provided free, well-trained therapy dogs to assist healthcare professionals with specific tasks.
Polly comes to CHAM thanks to funds raised by former New York Rangers player and current Boston Bruins defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, who collaborates with the Jam Kancer In The Kan Foundation.
"During my visits to CHAM I have seen firsthand how important Child Life specialists have been in treating patients," says Shattenkirk, who already funded staffing to keep CHAM's playroom open and available more hours a day. "My wife Deanna and I jumped at the opportunity to add a four-legged member to the team. We believe Polly will have a very positive impact on all the children she comes into contact with."
Polly will serve to "treat" both young patients who need physical and emotional support, as well as those recovering from an operation and need help getting out of bed and walking. It will also help children who need motivation to have open conversations about difficult and stressful topics, such as eating disorders. Polly will keep about seven patients a day company and will live with her own certified child life specialist, Katy Dessick.
"Polly is a unique member of our Child Life team," says Katy. "Few children's hospitals have therapy dogs to meet the needs of patients. We are very grateful to Kevin Shattenkirk for making this possible, and also to Canine Companions, who spend countless hours training dogs to support those who need a little more of help."

International Women's Day It is no longer ignored: the time has come for the health of Hispanic women

The Healthy Americas Foundation ® launches free webinar
Washington, DC, March 8, 2024 - During the dynamic celebration of International Women's Day, the Healthy Americas Foundation ® (HAF) is proud to announce the launch of an innovative webinar that aims to address the ignored health needs of Hispanic women. Spearheaded by Dr. Jane L. Delgado, president and CEO of HAF, this project represents a watershed moment in prioritizing the well-being of Hispanic women, who have long been underrepresented in health care conversations.
Healthy Americas Foundation
Dr. Delgado emphasized, "For more than two decades, Hispanic women have been the largest group of women in the country after non-Hispanic white women, but our health needs have often been put aside." In response to this disparity, HAF collaborated closely with Hispanic health and community organizations to determine what crucial health information Hispanics want as they navigate the complex aspects of their lives.
Her comments clearly laid out the path forward: Hispanic women want health guidance that is comprehensive and takes their culture into account, without focusing on illnesses or assigning blame. In turn, health professionals expressed the need for effective strategies to communicate complex health information in a way that makes sense.
Building on this valuable community experience, HAF launched a set of seven comprehensive seminars, My Sister , which were condensed into a dynamic two-hour on-demand webinar. Mi Hermana distinguishes itself by being available in Spanish and English, having cultural competency, and using a non-commercial approach. It focuses exclusively on providing a vital understanding of health without promoting any product or service.
This engaging webinar delves into the various aspects of health, including the body's systems and their interconnection, mental health and well-being, and important environmental health factors such as access to clean water and clean air. It also offers the latest scientific advances and a practical understanding of nutrition, lessons on interpreting food labels, the meaning of USP certification, and personalized health planning strategies.
Dr. Wendi S. Williams, Chancellor of Fielding Graduate University, Runs for APA President
The content, available in Spanish and English, transcends conventional paradigms of health education by promoting comprehensive understanding rather than addressing health issues in isolation. This webinar, aimed at physicians, other health professionals, and anyone interested in Hispanic health, offers the opportunity to receive two free continuing medical education credits . To gain access to these valuable resources and join the movement to make everyone's health better, please visit https://www.healthyamericasfund.org/mi-hermana.

Debt.com's latest holiday spending survey shows that many people will spend more money due to inflation and use their credit cards to cover the costs.
Fort Lauderdale, Fla. , Nov. 20, 2023 - Inflation continues to drive up prices on everything from groceries to holiday gifts, but a new Debt.com survey shows many Americans aren't as worried about the impact of prices like last year.
Debt.com is the consumer website where people can find help with credit card debt, student loan debt, tax debt, credit repair, bankruptcy, and more. Debt.com works with vetted and certified providers that give the best advice and solutions for consumers ‘when life happens.’

Among respondents, three in five (54%) say they will use credit cards to cover the costs of holiday shopping.
"It's almost an American tradition to go into debt during the holidays.
The fear of high prices and 'FOMO' (fear of missing out) is very strong leading up to the holidays," said Howard Dvorkin , CPA and president of Debt.com.
Two-thirds (66%) of respondents are bringing forward their purchases compared to last year. More than one in three (34%) started shopping in November, and 15% did so over the summer, when inflation briefly fell for the first time in two years. Still, credit card debt is up 16.6% from just a year ago, and Americans now owe more than $1 trillion on their credit cards.
With average interest rates of more than 26% on major credit cards and more than 30% on store cards, Dvorkin says, "Shoppers should ask themselves if they really need to buy gifts for everyone or, instead, buy gifts for a small group of family and friends.

Los Angeles, Aug. 29, 2023 - Dr. U Hair and Skin Clinic announced that a recent research report hinted at a potential breakthrough in the treatment of acne keloidalis nuchae (AKN), a condition chronic and burdensome The study titled " Papular Acne Keloidalis Nuchae Treatment Success using Follicular Unit Excision " was published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD) case reports.
Three patients with acne keloid nuchal (AKN) were successfully treated by FUE using UGraft Zeus (PRNewsfoto/Dr. U Hair and Skin Clinic)
AKN is characterized by persistent inflammation, scarring hair loss (alopecia), and distressing symptoms such as foul-smelling discharge, keloid-like lesions, malaise, itching, and social difficulties. Although it predominantly affects men of color, recent studies have shown that whites of European descent account for 9-10% of cases , with women least affected.
The study reports the first use of a procedure called follicular unit extraction (FEU), often used in hair transplantation, as a possible remedy for AKN. Using the EUF technique, individual hair follicles within visible AKN papules are removed, with the goal of slowing the disease while minimizing scarring. The research highlights the positive results seen in three patients who underwent this EUF-based treatment.
Dr. Sanusi Umar, lead author of the study and Associate Physician at the University of California Los Angeles, Torrance Harbor-UCLA, and Dr. U Hair and Skin Clinic in Manhattan Beach, explains: "Our study suggests that the EUF technique could be a promising treatment for AKN, especially when it comes to hair-bearing papules. This method has the potential to achieve long-lasting remission while preserving the patient's appearance."
The study delves into the methods used, the patient selection criteria, and the innovative FUE technology UGraft Zeus® (Dr. U Devices Inc., Manhattan Beach, California), which makes it possible to extract hair, often curly, affected by AKN and deeply embedded in scar tissue. Research underscores the importance of specialized EUF devices and minimizing the risk of damaging hair follicles.
Patients with confirmed AKN lesions that had not responded to standard treatments experienced lasting relief after a single EUF treatment session.
The research deepens our understanding of AKN and opens a potential avenue for effective treatment. These findings give hope to people with AKN and to healthcare professionals looking for novel strategies to address this condition.

Collectively, Americans owe almost $1 trillion on credit cards and report that their plastics make them feel "stressed," "sad," and even "hopeless."
Fort Lauderdale, Florida , May 17, 2022 - Credit cards are so convenient that many Americans say the temptation to use them, even when they know they shouldn't, is taking a toll on their mental health . https://www.debt.com/research/mental-health-money-survey/
Debt.com surveyed more than 1,000 Americans to find out what role credit cards play in stress, depression and overall mental well-being today. The results were notably worse than last year:
In 2022, more than 21% of respondents admitted to feeling "stressed out" after using credit cards. This year, that number rose to almost 34%.
That stress continued when they looked at their credit card bill. In 2022, just looking at credit card statements stressed 39% of survey respondents. This year, the number increased to 43%.
Last year, just over 3% admitted, "My partner and I got into an argument over my credit card spending." This year, this value increased to more than 11%.
Overall, 74% of those surveyed last year agreed that "the convenience of credit cards can negatively affect mental health." This year, the number reached 78%.
One obvious explanation for these increases is persistent and long-lasting inflation that is eating away at Americans' incomes. But, says Howard Dvorkin, CPA and president of Debt.com, there's a more subtle and complex reason.
" Inflation is just a symptom of a general disease," Dvorkin noted. "Americans have faced one economic crisis after another and their financial immunity system has been so weakened that they are turning to credit cards as temporary relief."
They are also using credit cards to mask social problems. Just over 11% of respondents say they hide credit card spending from their partner. Another 4% avoid dating entirely due to debt.
Many mentioned "retail therapy" (impulse buying to feel better) as their coping mechanism. Almost 12% buy items with a credit card every week and then regret it. For most, this resulted in an average debt of $1,000 or less. However, the figures on that amount were worrying:
16% incurred debt between $1,000 and $5,000
Nearly 15% had debt between $5,000 and $15,000
2% had debts between $15,000 and $20,000
Nearly 3% incurred debt of more than $20,000
Along with mental health, physical health can also deteriorate due to credit card debt. More than 6% of people indicate that they have experienced loss of sleep and appetite or low self-esteem due to their credit card bills.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Don Silvestri , president of Debt.com, is calling on Americans to consider their credit cards as a factor impacting their mental health.
"Credit card balances are up nearly 20% from a year ago, according to TransUnion, and have proven to be not only a financial comfort but an emotional support," he says. "When I tell people that their credit cards may be affecting their mental health, they don't believe me until I ask them some of the questions Debt.com asks in its annual survey."
Both Dvorkin and Silvestri say the easiest way to restore mental health is to eliminate credit card debt, and both say it's relatively easy to do. "Fortunately, getting out of credit card debt doesn't require years of expensive psychotherapy," Dvorkin said. "Start with a free debt analysis from a certified counselor."

In addition to the impact on the quality of life of patients and their family caregivers, dementia is one of the most expensive non-curable chronic diseases, which places an increasing burden on the Colombian health system.
A major problem in Colombia and in most Latin American countries is that people with dementia are diagnosed infrequently, and dementia is not well characterized. The delay in the accurate diagnosis and the misdiagnosis of dementia prevent adequate treatment, genetic counseling and worsen the prognosis. This situation is exacerbated in Latin America due to the limited options for culturally valid cognitive tests and the sociobiological and phenotypic diversity of Latinos, which affect the characterization of dementia.
Dra Lina Zapata winning the MIT Harvard Club de Colombia Beyond Leadership Award - Medical Innovation.
To address these issues, Dr. Lina Zapata leads an interdisciplinary research team in Cali, Valle del Cauca, Colombia, within the Fundación Valle del Lili Research Center, with the aim of testing the accuracy of technology-based cognitive assessments. novel and scalable to support the accurate detection and characterization of dementia in this region of Colombia.
Dr. Zapata's research team has used digital tools to identify the cognitive, clinical, and genetic profiles of Colombian adults with dementia in southwestern Colombia, within a mixed and diverse population (indigenous, Afro-Colombian, and with European ancestry), using genetic risk model software, and is currently studying the whole genome. This will help make early and accurate diagnoses of dementia, detect new genetic mutations for neurodegenerative diseases in this region, and eventually reduce inequity in brain health in Colombia.
Dr. Lina Zapata's project has received grants and funding from major international associations against dementia, such as the Global Brain Health Institute (USA), the Alzheimer's Association (USA), the Alzheimer Society (UK ) and the Latin American and Caribbean Consortium on Dementia (RedLat).
Dra Lina Zapata winning the MIT Harvard Club de Colombia Beyond Leadership Award - Medical Innovation.
One of the main benefits of this project is the inclusion of a population understudied and underrepresented in international research on dementia. This will allow us to better understand the clinical presentation of dementia in Colombia (which may differ from that of other countries for cultural and genetic reasons), gain more knowledge about our genetic vulnerability in relation to neurodegenerative diseases, but will also allow Colombian patients with dementia participate in international clinical trials for future treatments, and reduce inequality in the diagnosis and treatment of dementia.
Dr. Lina Zapata said "Through our research, we aim to provide more accurate and culturally relevant diagnosis and treatment for people living with dementia in Colombia, while promoting diversity and inclusion in global dementia research." dementia.

The Good Newsroom TM is expanding its coverage, bringing positive community news and stories to mobile phones to facilitate communication with the Latino community.
New York , Feb. 7, 2023 - The Archdiocese of New York announced the launch of a mobile app for its new news channel, The Good Newsroom TM . This innovative application is designed to continue the mission of the news platform: to share positive stories from the community, highlighting good works and their impact in the region.
In an effort to enhance a sense of fellowship in the community, the Archdiocese has taken great strides to include New York's Latino community in its coverage efforts. The news platform publishes bilingual content, in English and Spanish, including a column in Spanish in the foreground of its main page.
"The Good Newsroom TM must play an important role in the Latino community of New York," said Bishop Joseph Espaillat, key member of the Planning and Oversight Committee of the broadcaster, The Good Newsroom. "There is not a lot of media coverage of the Church in the city. We know that spirituality and faith are of great importance to Latinos, but rarely do you read stories or news about what is happening in the Catholic community."
The new app makes great use of video narration and fast response times to report on Archdiocesan events and initiatives. Informational content ranges from updates on parishes, schools and charities, to breaking news in the community. "As Latinos, we should be listening more to this type of information," Bishop Espaillat said. "That is our purpose, to speak about faith in a way that has not been done before, using all possible tools to announce the Good News or Good News.
"Through a commitment to digital innovation, the Archdiocese has replaced Catholic New York , its biweekly newspaper that has been in print for more than four decades. "We realized that when we wrote the reports, they became old news by the time the newspaper reached the hands of the readers," explained Monsignor Espaillat. "For that reason we decided to create this new platform."
The Good Newsroom TM mobile app is now available and can be downloaded from the Apple Store and Google Play. Visit the link https://thegoodnewsroom.org/ to view their daily news and learn more.

Stockton, Calif. , Jan. 13, 2023 - On the afternoon of February 22, 2022, after a minor traffic accident with an unidentified Stockton Police Department officer, Ms. Gaeta was followed to an isolated rural area of Stockton, California, where there were no witnesses to the tragic events that occurred. Tracy Gaeta breathed her last at the end of Rolerson Road, where within seconds she was killed by a Stockton Police Department officer who fired thirty-three (33) rounds into her car. The lawsuit alleges this was a stunning display of excessive force and reckless disregard for human life, as well as malicious conduct.
Today, the children of Tracy Gaeta (Photo), a 54-year-old grandmother who was killed by a Stockton, CA police officer, filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Eastern District.
"The disregard for the life of Tracy Gaeta by a member of the Stockton Police Department is shocking and outrageous. We look forward to bringing justice to her family, " said Jayme Walker, Esq. of Gwilliam Ivary Chiosso Cavalli & Brewer, who represents the family. Ms. Walker continued: "Ms. Gaeta was not intoxicated. She was experiencing a mental health crisis. Her family is shocked that she was involved in an altercation with the police, especially that she was killed by the police ".
The complaint states in part: "Instead of holding his position and waiting for other officers to arrive from the safety of his police patrol, Defendant RIBERA exited his vehicle without justification and needlessly drew his service weapon, constituting a demonstration disproportionate force in relation to the seriousness of the alleged crime(s) in progress, leaving the scene of a minor traffic accident".
"The excessive use of deadly force against Ms. Gaeta is simply egregious. Reviewing the officer's body camera and dash camera recordings, it seems clear that the use of deadly force against Tracy Gaeta was willful, excessive, and objectively unreasonable under the circumstances reflected in the video. This is another example of race playing a significant role in the use of deadly force against minorities," said Angelina Austin, Esq. of Gwilliam Ivary Chiosso Cavalli & Brewer.
"Officer Ribera needlessly escalated the situation, refusing to wait a few minutes for support and exited his patrol car, then intentionally aimed and fired approximately 33 rounds at Tracy Gaeta in a shocking display of excessive deadly force," stated Gary Gwilliam, Esq. by Gwilliam Ivary Chiosso Cavalli & Brewer, the law firm retained by Tracy Gaeta's family.

The digital divide during and after COVID-19 - According to the California Public Policy Institute , the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of universal digital access. The gaps in reliable access to the internet and digital devices that have contributed to inequalities have become more apparent during the pandemic. Over the past two years, educators and policy makers have worked to address two key barriers to access: affordability and lack of infrastructure. Connected California will actively work to close the digital divide in our state for people of all ages.
BEYOND TYPE 1 AND NICK JONAS LAUNCH #SeeTheSigns CAMPAIGN FOR WORLD DIABETES DAY 11/14
By PR Newswire-Hispanic PR Wire
THE DIABETES COMMUNITY WILL BE AT THE LEAD TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT
THE SIGNS OF TYPE 1 AND TYPE 2 DIABETES SHARING PERSONAL STORIES
WITH NICK JONAS KICKING OFF THE CAMPAIGN
San Mateo, Calif., Nov. 14, 2022 - Today is World Diabetes Day and Beyond Type 1 , a global nonprofit organization dedicated to the diabetes community, launches #VeLasSeñales , a campaign of the diabetes community to raise awareness about the signs of diabetes by sharing their personal stories.
#SeeTheSigns is a powerful campaign from Beyond Type 1 and Beyond Type 2 that encourages the diabetes community and everyone impacted by the illness to post a picture or video of themselves holding up their fingers to show the number of signs they or their loved one had prior to their diagnoses. The campaign will be in both English—#SeeTheSigns—and Spanish—#VeLasSeñales.
Beyond Type 1 has the largest digital footprint among diabetes nonprofits and #SeeTheSigns is calling on its community of 2 million people with diabetes and everyone affected by diabetes to post a photo or a video of themselves holding up their fingers to show the number of signs they or their loved ones saw before their diagnoses. The campaign will take place in both English, #SeeTheSigns, and Spanish, #VeLasSeñales.
Some people are holding up four fingers to show four signs, some two, and some zero. Nick Jonas, the multi-platinum recording artist, actor and co-founder of Beyond Type 1, kicked off the campaign on Instagram to more than 33 million followers, sharing that he featured four signs. Nick was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 13 and will celebrate his "diaversary" on November 15, the day after World Diabetes Day.
"I had lost 25 pounds (11 kilos) in two weeks. I was thirsty all the time. I was going to the bathroom a lot and was irritable. I knew something was wrong, but I didn't know what," says Nick. "We want everyone to know what the signs are so they can see them. I'm a fan of all people living with diabetes – they are leading the #SeeTheSigns by sharing their personal stories and showing the many facets of diabetes. Anyone can be diagnosed with diabetes, at any age, anywhere.
Knowing what the signs are, especially in type 1 diabetes, can be the difference between life and death. According to the DT1 Index (T1D Index) it is estimated that, worldwide, nearly 36,000 people died this year from type 1 diabetes without ever being diagnosed [1] . Not recognizing the signs can lead to a life-threatening condition called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), whose symptoms can be confused with those of the flu or another virus.
Type 1 diabetes differs from type 2 diabetes in that it is an autoimmune disorder, but both diseases have four key signs: excessive thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, and exhaustion.
"One in 10 people worldwide have diabetes. One in two is undiagnosed [2] . With type 1 diabetes in particular, this can be life-threatening," said Deborah Dugan, CEO of Beyond Type 1. "At Beyond Type 1 we offer specific spaces for the Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes communities, to come together and share, to learn and laugh, to cry and thrive. Every day I am amazed at the resilience of this community."
Those who share their story in #VeLasSeñales include people with diabetes - of any type - and their loved ones who saw the signs. Other participants include nearly 1,000 volunteer activists from all 50 states. Beyond Type 1 volunteers have been raising awareness about the signs of type 1 diabetes for the past several years in a program supported by The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust.
Contact a health care provider immediately if you see the signs #SeeTheSigns.

Having a real Christmas tree at home brings joy to everyone who sees it... and smells it
The "Joy to the Real" campaign shows the "perfectly imperfect" journey to the joy of bringing home a real Christmas tree.
"Ours is the real thing," says Marsha Gray, executive director of the RCTB. "So naturally, it's important to us to highlight real moments that become cherished memories, and not a staged vision of an unattainable experience."
To do this, the RCTB has requested real videos from fans of real trees, detailing everything from the purchase of the tree and its arrival at home, through its assembly and decoration, to turning on the lights. The result is a snapshot of all the little things that make great memories. You can watch the video here.
Oscar de La Hoya and Adventist Health White Memorial Hospital announce donation of more than $1 million to treat breast cancer, calling others to join and help Los Angeles communities access quality health care
Howell, Michigan, Nov. 1, 2022 - Joy to the world, indeed. There is a simple way to stimulate the feeling of joy in oneself: just breathe in the gift that a real Christmas tree brings with its smell. According to the Real Christmas Tree Board (RCTB), when respondents across the country were asked to choose how they felt when they smelled a real Christmas tree, they chose "joyful" more than any other emotion (the 42% of real tree buyers and 39% of all respondents). The second options were "happy", "nostalgic", "calm" and "grateful". 1 Not a bad result at a time when we could use a little less stressful feelings and a little more feel-good ones.
The "Joy to the Real" campaign shows the "perfectly imperfect" journey to the joy of bringing home a real Christmas tree.
Consumers' favorite holiday scent is "Christmas itself."
In the same survey, four out of five respondents (81%) agreed that "real Christmas trees smell like Christmas" itself. 1 48% of those who bought a real tree last year said their main reason for doing so is because they love the smell. 1
When asked to rank the different smells associated with Christmas, respondents said that the real Christmas tree is their favorite smell of the season (56%), more so than cookies (50%), cinnamon (50% ), hot cup chocolate (45%) and gingerbread (43%). The smell of mint stands at 42%, followed by the smell of a campfire (37%) and roasted chestnuts (16%). 1
The "Alegría a lo Real" campaign will be advertised on social networks and in certain digital advertisements.
"We think the tour creates the joy," Gray said. "And that's what we're focused on in the 'Joy to the Real' campaign. It's based on the idea that an artificial Christmas tree is one product, while a real Christmas tree is something else entirely. In a previous national survey, 76% of those surveyed told us that's how they saw it, seeing real Christmas trees as an experience, not just a product." two
"We like to say that experiences with real trees create joy in the moment, traditions throughout the years and memories that last a lifetime," he added.
Those who switched to a real tree seem to agree. 78% of those who previously bought an artificial tree, but tried a real one in 2021, say they wish they had started buying a real one sooner.

The landing on the Moon by Apollo 11 was a momentous achievement for the United States and ushered in the expansion of space exploration and new technologies, such as the lunar rover. However, the success of the mission was only one of several historical moments that were happening in the country during that time. Alongside the cultural and political event of the Apollo program, there was the Cold War, the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, and the anti-war movement.
More than 400,000 people contributed to the success of the US space program. The best and brightest scientists, mathematicians, artists, engineers, writers, coders, doctors, and hundreds of other experts worked for more than a decade to send humans to the Moon and bring them home safely.
"The current US space program is the product of those who worked to make the first steps on the Moon possible," said Ka Chun Yu, curator of space sciences at the Museum. "From history and politics to the Apollo missions, the International Space Station and the current Artemis program, this exhibit showcases the power of human ingenuity, commitment and cooperation."
"Apollo: When We Went to the Moon" is a traveling exhibit jointly produced by the US Space and Rocket Center and Flying fish. This exhibition will be on view until January 22, 2023.

Emergency Funds Supplement More Than $22 Million in Funding to Puerto Rico Over the Past Five Years for the Island's Long-Term Recovery
New York , Sept. 28, 2022 - The Ford Foundation announced today that it will provide $1.5 million in emergency funding to Puerto Rico to support recovery efforts following Hurricane Fiona. In partnership with local nonprofits and community organizations, the foundation supports philanthropic and advocacy efforts for those affected by the storm. This contribution brings Ford's total commitment to the long-term recovery in Puerto Rico to more than $22 million since 2017.
Ford Foundation Logo
The catastrophic flooding caused by Hurricane Fiona left 75% of the population of Puerto Rico without drinking water and the entire island without electricity, and there is no clear estimate of when public services will be restored. The brunt of the storm's impact hit areas in the Southwest, where there are still 3,600 homes covered by blue tarps from Hurricane Maria in 2017 and a magnitude 6.4 earthquake in December 2019.
Although the current crisis was created by Hurricane Fiona, the severity of the damage is directly related to the slow and ineffective response to previous disasters.
“We have seen, in previous natural disasters, that underlying structural inequalities have a direct impact on relief and recovery efforts, and deep inequities are further exacerbated without deliberate and meaningful intervention,” said José García, director of the Future program. of Workers of the Ford Foundation. "In order for more than three million people in Puerto Rico to not only survive after this disaster, but also recover with dignity, we need coordinated leadership and rapid investments in all sectors, as well as listening to the needs of the most affected communities. There is no time to lose".
"Since Maria, Ford has promoted bolder funding initiatives to support immediate post-disaster response and long-term advocacy and transformation processes. After five years of continuous support, and now in the face of systemic challenges for Puerto Rico that Fiona brings to light, we feel accompanied by this Foundation", commented Ariadna Michelle Godreau Aubert, founder and executive director of Ayuda Legal Puerto Rico . "We encourage other foundations to view this juncture as an opportunity to step up and reimagine how we support survivors. While basic needs are by definition essential, we also need resources to think through and implement a strategy for future conditions and possibilities for communities eager to enjoy their right to stay and return to their homes and lands, as well as guarantee decent living conditions".
THE FORD FOUNDATION - The Ford Foundation is an independent organization working to address inequality and build a future rooted in justice. For more than 85 years, it has supported visionaries on the front lines of social change around the world, guided by its mission to strengthen democratic values, reduce poverty and injustice, promote international cooperation, and advance the fulfillment of humanity. Today, with an endowment of $16 billion, the foundation is headquartered in New York with 10 regional offices in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

New report from the National Women's Law Center and its partners examines the housing crisis and its policies in the United States, as well as the impact on women of color

Washington, Aug. 15, 2022 - Today, the National Women's Law Center, in collaboration with the Insight Center and the Groundwork Collaborative , released The Roots of Discriminatory Housing Policy: Moving Toward Gender Justice in Our Economy ("The Roots of Discriminatory Housing Policy: Moving Toward Gender Justice in Our Economy"), a report that highlights the inextricable links between housing justice and gender justice, as well as outlining solutions to promote housing as a public good. The release follows the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report : prices rose 8.5% year-on-year in July and rents increased 6.3% between July 2021 and July 2022, the highest rate in more than 35 years.
"Women have always borne the brunt of a socioeconomic system designed to benefit from their underpaid and undervalued work," said Fatima Goss Graves, president and CEO of the National Women's Law Center. "By virtue of this powerful collaboration, my colleagues excavate the damaging housing policy decisions that littered our history and created the disaster we face today. And, most importantly, this document reminds us of the best policy options." and reasonable solutions that can put us on the path to a more equitable tomorrow.
Through critical analysis and historical examination, the article highlights the housing crisis in this country, its disproportionate impact on women of color, and its roots in centuries of underinvestment and policies that are racist, sexist, and discriminatory against people. with disabilities that helped white men build wealth while taking wealth away from women, people of color, and people with disabilities.
Women, particularly women of color, were already more likely than non-Hispanic white men to spend most of their income on housing before the pandemic. During the COVID-19 pandemic, African American and Latina women have consistently been more likely than non-Hispanic white men to fall behind on rent and mortgage payments.
"Stable housing is an essential element of economic security for families and a critical part of a healthy and sustainable economy," said Dr. Rakeen Mabud, Chief Economist and Managing Director of Policy and Research at Groundwork . "Policymakers must use all available tools to address the acute crisis that so many women and families face today."
Andrea Flynn, Senior Director of the Insight Center, added : "Safe, accessible and affordable housing should be invested not as a commodity, but as a public good. Housing creates opportunities and outcomes related to employment, education, health , transportation, care and general well-being across generations. A safe home, in a community full of opportunity, is a prerequisite for human prosperity and economic security."

The actress and mother of two shares the importance of having financial stability and making decisions that protect our loved ones
Arlington, Virginia , June 21, 2022 - Life Happens, a national nonprofit organization that educates consumers on the importance of life insurance as part of a financial plan, today announces his collaboration with actress, singer-songwriter, dancer, model, producer, author, wife and mother Roselyn Sánchez (l), to highlight the importance of life insurance during Life Insurance Awareness Month (LIAM) of Life Happens in September.
As a mother of two children, Roselyn knows how much everything changes when one becomes a mother. "For starters, you no longer live for yourself, you live for your children," she commented. "Family is the most important thing to me, and every decision, both big and small, comes back to them." Like Roselyn, all parents are constantly faced with different options for their families. It can be overwhelming, but luckily the decision to get life insurance doesn't have to be. That's why this year's LIAM campaign theme is: Either Get Life Insurance: An Easy Choice.
This year's campaign for LIAM has taken on new importance as the need for life insurance continues to grow. According to the 2022 Insurance Barometer Study , conducted by Life Happens and LIMRA, 44% of Americans would experience financial hardship within six months if the main breadwinner in their household died, while that one in ten believes that the difficulties would arise in just one week. The same survey also revealed that the need for life insurance is higher in certain communities, with the Hispanic community expressing the highest need: 51% say they need life insurance or expanded coverage from their current police.
As a native of Puerto Rico, Roselyn has partnered with Life Happens to change this statistic and encourage all Americans, including Hispanics, to purchase life insurance. By educating people about this important product, Roselyn hopes she can inspire people to get the coverage they need.
"Life insurance is something that many people think about, but don't act on. I know this can be especially true in the Hispanic community, something that I hope to change through my alliance with Life Happens", highlighted Roselyn Sánchez. "Through education and this year's Life Insurance Awareness Month campaign, I believe all Americans will see that the decision to get life insurance is not a big commitment, but rather a decision. easy that doesn't cost too much".
Resources featuring Roselyn and this year's theme "Life Insurance: An Easy Choice" are now available on Life Happens Pro: https://lifehappenspro.org/life-insurance-awareness-month
"Roselyn Sanchez (r), is an amazing role model as she brings the same energy and passion she has for her career and her family to our campaign and mission," said Faisa Stafford, President and CEO of Life Happens . "We are thrilled to have Roselyn as our spokesperson for Life Insurance Awareness Month 2022 as she will deliver the message that providing financial security to our loved ones with life insurance is truly an easy and affordable decision."
Roselyn will serve as LIAM's national spokesperson in September. As part of this partnership, Roselyn will share more about her life insurance experience, including in this online public service announcement (PSA): https://lifehappens.org/roselyn/. Debt doesn't always cause divorce, but it's often the result of it, according to a survey by Debt.com and DivorceMag.com
A new survey from Debt.com indicates that impulse purchases with credit cards can lead to stress, guilt and mental health problems.
Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., May 23, 2022 - Credit cards are so convenient that many Americans say the temptation to use them, even when they know they shouldn't, is taking a toll on their mental health.
Debt.com is the consumer website where people can find help with credit card debt, student loan debt, tax debt, credit repair, bankruptcy, and more. Debt.com works with vetted and certified providers that give the best advice and solutions for consumers ‘when life happens.’
Debt.com surveyed more than 1,000 Americans to find out what role credit cards play in stress, depression, and overall mental well-being today.
More than 21% of respondents say they feel stressed after using credit cards, another 20% say they feel guilty, and 6% say they feel desperate. More than 30% say they avoid looking at their credit card bills because it's too painful, and nearly 20% applied for new credit because they were sad or stressed.
"Credit cards are so convenient that they become a temporary solution to personal problems," said Howard Dvorkin, CPA and president of Debt.com. "Going to a store is no longer required to shop. You can do it from your phone while you're in bed, and that combination is dangerous and expensive."
More than 45% admit to having missed a payment on their credit card because they did not dare to check the balance of the statement.
"When you go into debt while feeling down, it never makes you feel better," observed Don Silvestri , president of Debt.com. "Not only does it affect mental health, but it can also spread to loved ones."
The social impact of debt and mental health leaves 20% of Americans out of conversations about goals and plans, and 10% avoid hanging out with family and friends because of debt . Nearly 6% of respondents admit to hiding their credit card spending from their partner, and another 5% avoid dating due to debt.
Retail therapy, which involves making impulsive purchases to reverse feelings of sadness, was common among respondents. While this resulted in a median debt of $1,000 or less, figures above that amount were concerning:
*Debt greater than $1,000 up to $5,000 –25%
*Debt greater than $5,000 up to $15,000 – nearly 18%
*Debt greater than $15,000 up to $20,000 – more than 3%
*Debt greater than $20,000 – almost 3%
Along with mental health, physical health can also deteriorate due to credit card debt. More than 5% of people say they have suffered from loss of sleep, appetite, or low self-esteem due to their credit card bills.
With May being Mental Health Awareness Month, Debt.com urges Americans to take care of themselves by managing their debt. Visit Debt.com to learn how to eliminate your credit card balances and bring balance back to your life.

Alcoholics Anonymous can help
New York, May 9, 2022 - This is a question a problem drinker might ask, then immediately list reasons why this might not be true.
To help people come to their own conclusions about whether they have a problem with alcohol, AA provides a self-assessment tool: "Is AA for You?" . It includes twelve questions to help a person decide if AA is worth trying.
Alcoholism is a disease that does not respect age, diversity of abilities, beliefs, race, gender, wealth, occupation or education. Our experience shows that anyone can be an alcoholic. And, without a doubt, anyone who wants to stop drinking is welcome in AA.
The book Alcoholics Anonymous shares what many people with a drinking problem have found to be a helpful insight: that if, when you really want to stop drinking, you find you can't do it altogether, or if when you drink, have little control over the amount of alcohol you drink, you may have a drinking problem. The good news is that AA provides a solution for those seeking help.
AA works closely with professionals who can direct a client who may have a drinking problem to AA's program of recovery in their own state or province.
An AA member shares the following: "When I was ready to do something about my alcoholism, I went to a counselor in my company's employee assistance program." I told him the truth about how I was drinking. This professional told me, "You might want to try going to AA; it's something that might work for you." In my desperate mind, I thought: "it has to serve me" . And it really helped me."
Others reach out to AA on their own through the Internet. Out of curiosity about alcoholism or problem drinking, they turn to our website, aa.org , where they can find information about Alcoholics Anonymous or find an AA meeting near them.
Whether in person or online, if you have a problem with alcohol, AA can help. For more information, you may contact the Public Information desk at the General Service Office at publicinfo@aa.org or by calling (212) 870-3119.

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. , April 11, 2022 - One-third of divorced couples say money problems were a "major factor" in breaking up their marriages, but nearly two-thirds went into debt after their divorces were final.
Debt.com is the consumer website where people can find help with credit card debt, student loan debt, tax debt, credit repair, bankruptcy, and more. Debt.com works with vetted and certified providers that give the best advice and solutions for consumers ‘when life happens.’
These results, obtained from a new survey conducted by Debt.com and DivorceMag.com , were consistent across all income groups and across all age ranges. More than half of those surveyed reported debts greater than $5,000. Almost 15% of those people reported debts of more than $25,000.
"No matter how much you make, couples will fight over money.
No matter how much you have, a divorce will cost you money," said Don Silvestri , president of Debt.com. "We already knew this from our years of helping Americans get out of debt, but those high numbers were a bit surprising...and depressing."
Also, note how divorce affects credit scores . Just over 32% of respondents said their credit scores fell more than 50 points, the most popular response. While another 13% saw a decrease of 50 points or less, 20% saw no change.
"Divorce can be so emotionally, mentally and financially draining that many people who go through it don't think about secondary issues like credit scores," says Diana Shepherd (CDFA®) , Co-Founder and Editorial Director of Divorce Magazine . "Unfortunately, it really takes a high score after divorce to secure a new place to live, new credit cards, or even a new vehicle. A low credit rating can mean higher interest rates, which will further stretch your limited resources." financial".
Respondents' ages range from Gen Z (18-29) to baby boomers (60+), with an almost even split between genders and income levels ranging from less than $10,000 to more than $200,000.
Other results:
Just over 40% shared a debt with their ex-spouse that is now theirs alone. This is usually a joint credit card that is now in your name only.
Just over 20% considered legal separation instead of divorce to avoid taking on more debt.

Los Angeles, Dec. 18, 2021 - Two companies were ordered to pay $ 155.4 million to a former Senior Vice President of Litigation in Claims for compensatory and punitive damages after he won his wrongful termination lawsuit.
Carney Shegerian with his legal team at the Los Angeles offices of Shegerian & Associates.
On Tuesday, the jury found that Farmers Group, Inc. and the Farmers Insurance Exchange had retaliated against Andrew Rudnicki, a 37-year-old dedicated and decorated employee who was months away from his anticipated testimony in a case alleging claims under of the Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) ( Coates vs. Farmers ).
Fearing that his testimony could expose Farmers' inaction, the firm retaliated against Rudnicki and shamefully used him as a scapegoat to conceal its own failure to respond to concerns raised by Rudnicki on behalf of prospective Coates plaintiffs who gave rise to the Coates litigation.
The jury agreed. On Tuesday, Rudnicki received $ 5.4 million in compensatory damages. The jury also concluded that an official, director or executive representative of at least one of the defendants acted with intent, oppression or fraud against Rudnicki, which triggered a second phase of the trial.
On Thursday, the punitive damages phase of the trial began. Upon its conclusion, and in less than 40 minutes, a jury awarded Rudnicki an unprecedented $ 150 million punitive damages award against Farmers Insurance Exchange and Farmers Group, Inc.
The verdict is believed to be one of the highest in the state of California for similar allegations.
The lawsuit was filed and prosecuted by Shegerian and Associates on Rudnicki's behalf in Los Angeles Superior Court (Case # BC630158).

Scottsdale philanthropist "Guardian Warrior" is first non-Mexican to win prestigious award
By PR Newswire-Hispanic PR Wire
Scottsdale, Ariz. , Dec. 15, 2021 - Recognizing decades of tireless volunteer work and leadership at the Scottsdale-based Rancho Feliz Charitable Foundation , local philanthropist Gil Gillenwater was chosen for the Sonora Award for Philanthropy as the philanthropic person of the year for the Mexican state of Sonora. Gillenwater is the first non-Mexican citizen to win this award.

The ceremony took place yesterday, December 14, 2021, in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. The Sonora Award for Philanthropy was created in 2005 in order to create awareness and social responsibility among altruistic individuals, companies and institutions.
Gillenwater founded Rancho Feliz in 1987 with the goal of addressing both sides of poverty: from the material poverty of Mexico to the spiritual or purpose poverty of the United States. In addition to providing food, housing, health care and education to underprivileged people in Mexico, the organization offers a cross-border establishment where American and Canadian volunteers travel to Mexico and find meaningful connections by helping those who are not born in privileged circumstances. Gillenwater says: "We feed their stomachs, they feed our souls. We call this 'reciprocal donation' and to date more than 25,000 volunteers, mostly students, have improved their own lives by helping the less fortunate. Volunteers return to marry this new perception, helping to rebuild the moral fabric of our own communities. Everyone wins under our volunteer model. "
Gillenwater, a lifelong Arizona resident, currently serves as the president of Rancho Feliz. "I am truly honored to receive this award and thank the many volunteers who have given so much time and support to Rancho Feliz," said Gillenwater.
For 34 years, Rancho Feliz has raised and invested more than $ 16 million to build homes, educational centers, childcare centers, orphanages and volunteer dormitories along Arizona's southern border. The organization has distributed several tons of medical supplies, sponsored many medical procedures, and distributed more than 400 tons of food to provide 4.6 million meals to the hungry. He has funded more than 2,000 scholarships and even created a dog spay and neuter program. "This infrastructure has provided the foundation for entire families to rise out of extreme poverty and reach the global middle class," said a representative of the award committee for the Sonora Prize for Philanthropy.
Gillenwater's real estate career began in 1976. He and his partners formed limited partnerships that bought, zoned, and sold more than 10,000 acres of land in Arizona. In 2007, Gil gave up his real estate career and focused his energies on travel and philanthropy. Gillenwater is a recipient of the Hon Kachina Award, Arizona's highest honor for volunteering, and also received the annual "Good Neighbor Award" from the National Association of Realtors which also honors volunteering.
